Now that we live in the Pacific Northwest, I am loving all the various plants here. One of my new favorites that I discovered last spring is the coleus. It’s a great indoor plant (I’ve seen it live outdoors too) that lives on my kitchen table.
It’s one of those plants that can live in low light conditions well. Which is perfect for places that are gloomy a lot or if you don’t have a sunny window for it.
So, funny story, but once upon a time, I killed every house plant ever. In fact, when we lived in Arizona, I killed a cactus. Interestingly enough, now that we live in Oregon, I can keep plants alive! So maybe it was the brutal desert conditions. Or…maybe it was just me not being the best plant owner.
When I came upon the gorgeous coleus last year, my first thought was, “Hm can I keep this thing alive?” And then my second thought was, ‘How on earth am I going to decide which color to get?” The answer is, all of them.
Cool Things About the Coleus
- They come in a variety of colors.
- They can be low light plants. I have noticed when I leave mine in low light the purple doesn’t come through as brilliantly. But when it’s in the sun, the purple pops out! That said, they can do well in low light areas.
- They bloom! I cannot find a photo of one blooming, and unfortunately I didn’t photograph mine when it did bloom, so you’ll just have to trust me on this. They do bloom and it’s so pretty.
- They’re pretty hardy plants. I tend to forget to water mine (whoops) and it perks right back up when I water it. Which means it’s a great plant for us forgetful folks.
So, if you’ve seen the coleus around at your local store, and have wondered whether or not to splurge on one, I say go for it! They’re beautiful plants that easy to care for!
