Recently I wrote about whether or not you needed a blog niche to be successful. And I established that I’m solely in the “lifestyle blogger” camp, at least for me. If you’re thinking about starting a blog, you need to think about what kind blogger you want to be. But this time I don’t mean choosing a niche, I mean something different.
Long ago, when I started my first blog, I wrote anonymously. I used my blog as sort of a journal, and because I used a pen name, I wrote about whatever I wanted and didn’t censor myself. Let me clarify; this does not mean that I wrote gossipy stories about people I knew. It means that I wrote about what my heart was feeling about things and didn’t worry about putting my thoughts out there into the world.
This blog isn’t anonymous. In fact, you can see my photo right there to the right of this post. I put myself out there into the world and let my friends and family know I was blogging, and I linked them to this very blog. It was incredibly scary. (hi everyone I know!)
There’s a lot of ways to put your personality into your blog posts while still sharing your knowledge on a topic.
What’s Your Blogger Style?
- How would your friends and family describe you?
- What do you think is your best personality trait?
- How can you take the answers from the two questions above and portray that into your writing style?
There’s a lot of blogs I read whose writing styles are awesome-sauce. And I think, “Wow I want to write like them!” But the truth is, while I can love and appreciate their writing style, it isn’t my writing style.
My style of writing is who I am. I won’t change my style to fit into someone else’s idea of how I should be, and you shouldn’t either.
Embrace your cool and unique self, and let it shine on your blog <3
